The Five Axes of Strategic Maturity
The five axes are Market Fit, Deliverability & Scalability, Technology Excellence, Societal Impact, and Environmental Footprint. In a Horizon Scan, a leadership team scores its own position on each axis, Baseline, Competitive, or Leading, before that self-assessment is checked against independently gathered market evidence. The five axes exist so maturity gets scored on the same basis every time a company runs the exercise, rather than on whichever dimension feels most urgent in a given quarter.
What each axis measures, at each maturity level
| Axis | Baseline | Competitive | Leading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market Fit | What you sell was designed for a market that has since moved on | What you sell still matches current market expectations | What you sell anticipates where the market is heading next |
| Deliverability & Scalability | Current promise strains internal capacity to deliver | Current promise is delivered reliably at current scale | Could scale delivery significantly without breaking |
| Technology Excellence | Technology is a constraint the strategy has to work around | Technology keeps pace with what competitors offer | Technology is a genuine, demonstrable advantage |
| Societal Impact | Footprint on communities and stakeholders is largely unmeasured | Footprint is understood and actively managed as a risk | Footprint is understood well enough to be a genuine strength |
| Environmental Footprint | Performance lags what regulation and customers will expect | Performance is level with current expectations | Performance is ahead of what will be expected within the ambition's time horizon |
Why five axes and not fifteen
Five is deliberately few enough that a leadership team can score all of them, from memory, in one sitting, a scorecard nobody can complete honestly in the room isn't a scorecard, it's homework nobody does.
Is Your Strategy Still True, Or Just Still There?
The Horizon Scan gives leadership teams an independent, evidence-based pressure test of their strategy in weeks, not quarters, so you invest with confidence instead of momentum.
